• Drive from Srinagar to Shitkadi campsite by vehicle

• Approx. 90 km road journey

• Drive duration: 3 hours

• Scenic drive through Kashmir valleys and mountain roads

• Reach Shitkadi campsite and prepare for the trek

• Overnight stay in dome tents

Begin the Great Lakes Journey

Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Srinagar to Shitkadi, the base camp of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. Surrounded by beautiful mountain landscapes and rivers, Shitkadi offers the perfect setting to begin the trekking adventure. Spend the evening relaxing at camp and preparing for the days ahead.

Today’s route climbs towards Nichinai Pass, offering beautiful views of surrounding valleys and mountain ridges. After crossing the pass, trekkers descend towards the stunning Vishansar Lake, one of the most beautiful alpine lakes of the trek surrounded by peaceful meadows and Himalayan landscapes.

Today is reserved for acclimatization to help the body adjust to higher altitude. Trekkers can relax at camp or take an optional visit to the beautiful Kishansar Lake located near the campsite. Depending on weather and trail conditions, this day may also be used operationally during the trek.

This is one of the most rewarding days of the trek as trekkers cross Gadsar Pass, the highest point of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. The trail offers beautiful views of mountain ridges, alpine lakes, and open valleys before descending towards the scenic Gadsar campsite.

The day begins with a gradual climb towards Zaj Pass, offering beautiful mountain views and scenic landscapes. After crossing the pass, trekkers descend towards Gangbal and Nundkol Lakes, two of the most scenic alpine lakes of the trek.

The best time to do the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is from July to September. During this time, the alpine lakes are accessible, meadows are green, and the mountain views are at their best.

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is considered a moderate to difficult trek. Trekkers cover long distances, cross high mountain passes, and walk through changing terrain, so good fitness is recommended.

The trek is not recommended for complete beginners. However, beginners with good fitness, regular walking practice, and basic trekking preparation can complete the trek successfully.

The total trekking distance is approximately 75 km, covered over multiple days through valleys, alpine lakes, mountain passes, and scenic meadows.

The highest point of the trek is Gadsar Pass at around 13,800 ft, which is also the highest altitude reached during the journey.

Network availability is limited and may fluctuate during the trek. Postpaid SIM cards may work in some areas, while prepaid SIM cards generally do not work in Kashmir.

The trek covers several beautiful alpine lakes including Vishansar Lake, Kishansar Lake, Gadsar Lake, Satsar Lakes, Gangbal Lake, and Nundkol Lake.

Trekkers stay in dome tents on triple sharing basis throughout the trekking journey.

Trekkers should have good stamina and basic fitness. Regular walking, jogging, stair climbing, or cardio exercises before the trek can help make the experience more comfortable.

You should carry warm clothes, trekking shoes, rain protection, a backpack, personal medicines, sunscreen, sunglasses, water bottles, and essential trekking gear for changing mountain weather.

Snow patches are usually seen near higher passes during early season.

The trek starts near Sonamarg and ends at Naranag followed by drive to Srinagar.
