Tunagnth Temple

Tungnath is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India. It is the highest Shiva temple in the world, situated at an altitude of 3,680 meters (12,073 feet).

The temple is one of the Panch Kedar temples and holds great religious significance. It is believed to have been built by the Pandavas during their search for Lord Shiva to seek forgiveness after the Kurukshetra war.

Tungnath remains open only for a limited period every year, generally from May to October or early November. In winter, the temple is closed due to heavy snowfall, and the deity is worshipped at Makkumath village.

However, the trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila remains open throughout the year, depending on weather and snow conditions. In winter, the snow-covered trail attracts trekkers looking for a scenic and challenging experience.

The trek to Tungnath starts from Chopta and is about 3.5 km long. The trail is popular among both pilgrims and trekkers for its natural beauty and panoramic views of the Himalayas.

Tungnath is also a gateway to Chandrashila Peak, which is another 1.5 km steep hike from the temple. From Chandrashila, visitors can witness 360-degree views of famous peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath, and Chaukhamba.

The temple’s architecture is similar to other Kedar temples, made of stone and suited to the Himalayan terrain. It is constructed in Uttarakhand Sthapatya Shaili, a blend of Nagara style with regional architectural elements.

Tungnath is accessible by road till Chopta, which is well connected to cities like Rishikesh and Dehradun. The best time to visit is during Spring, summer and post-monsoon when the weather is clear and the temple is open.
